Issue 9 - 9th June 2022
This week I continue with information regarding our mindfulness program. If you recall from last week, mindfulness is being present in the here and now with our thinking and our actions. Ruminating in the past and stressing about the future contributes to anxiety, depression and negative thinking. Being present, in the moment, allows us to function at our best.
Developing mindfulness is best done through deliberate practice in breathing and meditation. The benefits of meditation and mindfulness for our students include:
- Assisting students with coping mechanisms who are at risk for emotional distress.
- Children sleep better, their capacity for learning improves (including concentration, ability to handle difficult situations)
- When students are more mindful of their emotions and how others are feeling, they are more likely to be compassionate and empathetic.
- Students feel safer in their environment at school; as though they belong, and in a safe environment for learning.
- Improves behaviour in classroom
- Reduced psychological distress
- Enhanced ability to manage difficult emotions
- Improves concentration
How can you assist with developing your child’s mindfulness, their ability to be in the here and now?
We use the school version of Smiling Mind. The Smiling Mind App is free for everyone. It is available on Apple App Store and Google Play
There are several categories. The category we use is ‘Kids’.
How can you support Smiling Mind at home?
Read Write Inc. Training Day
Recently our early years staff have participated in the Read Write Inc. Training sessions. At St. Peter Chanel we are committed to providing ongoing opportunities for our staff to grow and develop their repertoire and familiarity with this program. The training offered the staff further up-skilling in best practice, as well essential networking, where vital discussions took place in the best interests of our students.
During the training the staff were taken through step by step instructions on how to teach Read Write Inc. Phonics and the processes that underpin learning to read and write.
For each activity, staff:
- watched a film or joined in with a demonstration
- used the teaching resources and lesson plans to practise teaching the activities
- modelled activities with partners and implemented newly learnt skills
- learnt to identify assessment opportunities and how these guide future teaching of concepts.
- received coaching from the trainer (Mrs. Hart) to improve their teaching.
With the help of our committed staff, we are continually evolving our program into more efficient process.
Next year, we look to incorporate an extension home reading program that allows students’ learning to be supported and celebrated at home, so watch this space!

We were lucky enough to have great weather for our Cross Country Carnival on Wednesday the 1st of June 2022. Well done to all students who participated, the encouragement shown from everyone on the day was outstanding and it was great to see so many parents come along to be a part of the day as well. Congratulations to all students who placed in their races and were invited to attend NW Cross Country, today at Stella Maris. Results are listed below for both carnivals.
Thank you to the parents and friends committee for organising the colour fun run, it was a real highlight of the day for students and staff.

On Wednesday, 25th May, Grade 2 participated in National Simultaneous Storytime along with over two million other people throughout Australia.
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 22nd successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
This year's book was called Family Tree, written by Josh Pyke and illustrated by Ronojoy Ghosh. “It started with a seed, and that seed was me. And, over time, laughter filled my garden… A heartfelt celebration of family, community and the seasons of life to cherish and share.
After reading the story, Grade 2s enjoyed creating their own seedling jars to display in the classroom.
